Questions carriers actually ask

Straight answers on fees, contracts, paperwork and how we work. If yours is not here, call the desk.

01 / Common questions
Do I have to sign a long-term contract?

No. Every Northbound agreement is week to week. You can stop using us at any time with no notice period, no exit fee and no penalty. We would rather earn your business every week than rely on a contract to keep it.

What is forced dispatch, and do you do it?

Forced dispatch is when a dispatch service books a load without your approval and expects you to run it. We do not do it, ever.

Every load we find is sent to you first — lane, rate, broker and pickup window — and nothing is committed until you say yes. You can turn down as many loads as you want.

How much do you charge?

Solo owner-operators pay 5% of the gross load rate. Fleets of three or more trucks pay 4%. We also offer a $275 per truck per week flat rate for high-revenue trucks that prefer a fixed cost.

There is no setup fee, no monthly minimum and no charge for broker setups, invoicing or claims support. Full details are on our pricing page.

When do you take your fee?

Our fee is invoiced against the loads we book, typically weekly. We never take money up front and we never charge you for a week where we did not book you a load.

What documents do I need to get started?

Five things: your MC authority letter, a certificate of insurance, a signed W-9, a notice of assignment if you factor, and a signed dispatch agreement. Most carriers send everything in the morning and are booked on their first load the following day.

Do you work with my factoring company?

Yes. We work with any factoring company — we simply need your notice of assignment on file so invoices are submitted correctly. If you do not factor yet and want a recommendation, we are happy to point you to companies our carriers have had good experiences with.

What equipment types do you dispatch?

Dry van, reefer, flatbed, and step deck / RGN. Each equipment type is handled by a dispatcher who runs those lanes daily, so tarp pay, temperature requirements and permit needs are all factored into the rate before you accept a load.

Can I choose which lanes I run?

Absolutely. During onboarding we record your preferred lanes, states you want to avoid, your home-time schedule and your minimum rate per mile. Your dispatcher works within those boundaries and will not send you loads that fall outside them.

What happens if a broker does not pay?

We vet broker credit scores and days-to-pay history before committing your truck, which prevents the vast majority of payment problems. If a broker still goes past terms, we chase the payment on your behalf and add them to our internal blacklist so no other Northbound carrier hauls for them.

Do you handle detention and TONU claims?

Yes, and it is included at no extra cost. If you are held past the free time window, we file the detention claim with documentation and pursue it. The same goes for truck-order-not-used, lumper reimbursements and other accessorials.

Are you a broker?

No. Northbound Logistics is a dispatch service, which means we act as your agent under your own operating authority. You remain the carrier of record on every load, you keep your own authority and insurance, and the freight moves under your MC number.

What are your dispatch hours?

The main dispatch desk runs Monday to Friday, 6:00am to 9:00pm Central, and Saturday 8:00am to 4:00pm. Fleet clients also get a 24/7 emergency road line for breakdowns, accidents and after-hours issues.
